The Wagon R EV isn’t just another addition to India’s growing electric vehicle landscape; it represents Maruti’s calculated gamble to democratize electric mobility in a price-sensitive market. Priced between ₹9-10 lakh (ex-showroom), it undercuts current electric offerings from competitors like Tata Motors by a significant margin.
“We’ve been observing the EV space carefully,” said Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director of Maruti Suzuki India, during a press interaction following the announcement. “The timing feels right now, with battery costs declining and government incentives creating a favorable environment for both manufacturers and consumers.”
What makes this announcement particularly noteworthy is Maruti’s decision to electrify an existing, proven model rather than develop a ground-up EV. The Wagon R, with its practical box-like shape and spacious interior, has been among India’s top-selling cars for over two decades, with a loyal customer base that values its no-nonsense approach to mobility.
Technical Specifications: Surprising Range from a Small Package
While complete technical details are still under wraps, Maruti has revealed enough to pique interest. The Wagon R EV will feature a 35kWh lithium-ion battery pack developed in collaboration with Suzuki’s global R&D team and TOSHIBA. This setup is expected to deliver approximately 280km of range on a single charge—respectable figures for an urban runabout.
“The challenge wasn’t just fitting a battery into an existing platform,” explained Kenichi Ayukawa, Executive Vice Chairman of Maruti Suzuki. “It was about finding the right balance between range, performance, and cost—something no manufacturer has cracked in the sub-₹10 lakh segment yet.”
The electric motor will produce around 72 horsepower and 150Nm of torque, modest figures on paper but actually an improvement over the petrol Wagon R’s performance, particularly in city driving conditions where the instant torque of electric motors shines.
Design and Features: Familiar Yet Futuristic
Spy shots circulating online suggest that while the overall silhouette remains recognizably Wagon R, the EV version sports distinctive elements including a closed-off front grille, redesigned LED headlamps, and blue accents that have become something of an industry standard for denoting electric vehicles.
Inside, the dashboard has been completely revamped to accommodate a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a digital instrument cluster displaying range, battery status, and efficiency data. Climate controls appear to have retained physical buttons—a practical touch in a segment where usability trumps technological showboating.
“We haven’t forgotten what Wagon R customers value most: space, practicality, and ease of use,” said Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing & Sales. “The EV version builds on these strengths while adding the benefits of electric mobility.”
Production Strategy and Charging Infrastructure
Production will take place at Maruti’s Gujarat facility, which is undergoing modifications to accommodate EV manufacturing. Initial capacity is set at 5,000 units monthly, with the ability to scale up based on market response.
Addressing the perennial concern of charging infrastructure, Maruti has announced partnerships with three major charging network operators to install fast-charging stations at all Maruti Suzuki dealerships and service centers nationwide—potentially adding over 3,500 charging points to India’s growing network.
Additionally, each Wagon R EV will come with a portable charger compatible with standard 15A household sockets, capable of delivering a full charge in approximately 8 hours.

The entry of Maruti—with its unparalleled sales and service network—into the electric vehicle space marks a significant milestone in India’s EV journey.
