Maruti Dzire: The Sedan Which Marries Style, Efficiency and Practicality There are only a handful of names that come to mind when one talks about compact sedans in India and Maruti Dzire is definitely one of them.
Dzire, the country’s favourite sedan from Maruti Suzuki, has been a blockbuster right from its launch.
The latest model continues that tradition with minor styling updates, some new features and even better fuel efficiency.
And it remains a smart choice for folks in the market for an unfussy, value-packed vehicle.
Maruti Dzire: Elegant Simplicity in Design
ExteriorAt first sight, the Dzire looks familiar, yet new.
It looks contemporary, with chrome-accented grille, sharp projector headlamps with LED DRLs, and sculpted bumpers, and isn’t ‘in your face’ in anyway.
It’s a sedan’s sedan, one that looks tidy and well-proportioned and is aimed at buyers who prize discreet elegance more than provocative styling.
The profile is also relatively clean with enough character lines to keep it interesting.
The alloy wheels, also offer a shade of sportiness while, at the back, the discreet chrome strip and the LED tail lamps, round-off the design.
It might not set your pulse racing at every street corner, but it’s the balance, the mature styling of Dzire that wins you over.
Engine & Performance
Powering the Dzire underneath the bonnet is the conventional 1.2-litre petrol engine that makes 90 PS and 113 Nm of torque.
It’s designed more for smoothness and efficiency than for pure performance.
Transmission options will comprise a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT (Automated Manual Transmission). Those interested in lower running costs will also get the CNG version which makes 77 PS power.
The place where the Dzire really excels is in fuel efficiency. The petrol returns Upto 24 Km/l and the diesel reaches a delightful 31 km/kg.
On city streets, the Dzire is light and easy to handle, steering is a breeze at low speeds. T
he engine is a bit of a ride and will have you thinking twice before easing out on the road to haul out and overtake on the highway, but that goes with the territory.
Cabin & Features
Hop in, and the Dzire is greeted with a cabin that’s neatly arranged in here. A beige-and-black interior scheme gives it a feeling of space and air.
The dash is plain and simple but deep and usable, with 7-inch touchscreen infotainment that includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Comfort and convenience are taken care of on even your most routine of drives with features like automatic climate control, rear AC vents, push-button start and cruise control.
For as practical as it is, the cabin does hint at some cut corner costs – there’s a lot of hard plastic here, and there’s no premium touch, like a leather-wrapped steering wheel, or softer-touch materials.
Space-wise, the Dzire can accommodate four adults easily as there’s good legroom and headroom for the class; it can take five at a pinch.
Boot space at 378 litres is fine for the weekend’s luggage, but is not the biggest in class.
Pros
Awesome fuel efficiency: One of the most fuel-efficient sedans on sale in India, be it in petrol or CNG form.
Not to mention Maruti’s service reach is second to none: peace of mind from pocket friendly service charges & service centres are available everywhere.
User friendly: Light controls, tight turning circle and small dimensions makes it it an ideal candidate for congested city traffic roads.
Feature-rich: The car gets cruise control, LED exterior illumination, touchscreen infotainment with rear AC vents — welcome here.
Strong resale value: With a reliability and brand like Maruti, Dzire customers will get a strong resale value.
Cons
Performance is adequate: City driving is easy, but you need a bit of patience when overtaking on the highway; the AMT could feel lethargic on occasions.
Interior quality needs improvement: The cabin is awash in hard plastics, and some competitors are more sophisticated.
No split-folding back seat: Reduces flexibility for larger items.
Ground clearance can be a concern: Fully loaded, it may scratch over large speed breakers.
Misses out on a couple of contemporary safety aids: Although you get the basics (dual airbags, ABS, rear sensors), some features such as side airbags or ESP (stability control) are absent in the lower trims.
Maruti Dzire: Final Verdict
The Maruti Dzire is still offering what most of the Indian sedan buyer are after – reliable performance, excellent fuel efficiency, low running costs, and good value.
It’s not something that would set enthusiast hearts aflutter, nor is it one of those wealth-of-features-rich, you get-what-you-pay-for kind of cabins,
but it makes for a wonderfully practical daily mono-boxer, the likes of which very few vehicles can make a true claim to.
If fuel efficiency and low-ownership hassles are at the top of your checklist, the Dzire needs to be on your shortlist.
