If you’re in search of auto that can maneuver the city traffic without putting a strain on your bank account balance but still equipped with all the essentials, there’s a pretty solid answer in the form of the Celerio.
Maruti Celerio: This baby bottle warmer is designed to provide warming ability with a modern and trendy look in a compact size.
In its new avatar, the Celerio is no longer the boxy looking car that we have known till now.
It is now more curvaceous and fluidic on the outside with a happier looking front grille, swept-back headlamps and cool character lines along the sides.
It’s a design that is sedate, for a specific subset of people.
It is still very city-friendly with its small footprint and tight turning circle. The15- inch alloy wheels (on higher trims) and body-colored bumpers lend the car a touch of premiumness, but the appearance is kept clean and urban.
Spacious and Functional Cabin
In the cabin, the Celerio is surprisingly spacious for such a small car. The simple dash layout is user-friendly, and we like the look of the black-and-silver cabin.
Ingress and egress are a breeze, thanks to its tall-boy stance, and the cabin provides ample headroom and legroom to accommodate four adults.
The boot space is 313 litres, so ideal for bargain bags of shopping, your office and day-upon-the-wolds weekend luggage. Rear seat passengers have good space as well, though more so for two adults than three.
The features offered are a 7-inch SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Push-button start/stop, steering-mounted controls, power windows and keyless entry.
It isn’t very feature laden, but it ticks all the right boxes for day-to-day ease of use.
Fuel-Efficient Performance
Fuel economy is another key asset that the Celerio enjoys over competitors. Under the hood, it comes with a 1.0-litre K10C DualJet petrol engine producing 67 PS and 89 Nm of power figures.
The engine is not spectacular performance-wise, but is very efficient and smooth during everyday driving.
The stand-out figure is it’s mileage, maxing at 26.68 km/l (ARAI-certified) for the AMT version, which makes it one of the most fuel-efficient petrol cars available in India.
The engine is paired with a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT (Auto Gear Shift for added clutch-free convenience.
CNG trim too is in demand among mileage seekers as it keeps the running cost down for the users with a daily running pattern.
Simple Controls and Safety Elements
With its light controls and small size, as well as brisk engine response, the celerio is fun to drive in town too.
Whether in tight streets or crawling traffic, it feels nimble and manageable. The suspension is softly sprung, taking the bulk of road impurities in stride.
In terms of safety features, the Celerio gets dual airbags, ABS (with EBD), rear parking sensors, hill-hold assist (AMT), engine immobilizer and seat belt reminders.
It’s missing advanced driver assistance systems, but it’s a good list of basics for a vehicle of its price point.
Pros
Great fuel economy, a solid contender in the class
Small and convenient to manoeuvre around town
Cabin is quite spacious and boot is also good
Smooth AMT gearbox works in favour of urban driving ease
Maruti’s strong service network and cheap maintenance
Cons
Doesn’t have much power, breathless on the highway
Materials quality inside is utilitarian, not premium
Rear seat space is tight for three adults
No rear camera or high-tech extras
Play it safe design wise, not much to write home about
Maruti Celerio: Verdict
The Maruti Suzuki Celerio won’t turn heads with its design or load you up with luxury features, but it offers everything that’s important for the typical Indian car buyer – reliability, efficiency and practicality.
From first-time car owners to daily commuters or those who are stepping up from a two-wheeler, the Celerio is a compelling option as a value-for-money hatchback. It’s a reasonable car for buyers who prefer an easy-to-own, easy-to-drive, easy-on-the-wallet vehicle.
