Toyota Innova Hycross: In India, the Toyota Innova has been the epitome of MPVs. The workhorse has been synonymous with reliability of the bulletproof kind, acres of space inside, and unrivalled comfort, and has been a hit with both families and fleet drivers.
But Toyota has bucked the trend and thrown all the rules out the window with their newest addition — the Innova Hycross. It’s not just an upgrade; it’s a complete reinvention.”
The Hycross looks nothing like the ladder-frame powered diesel Innova Crysta with radical SUV-inspired styling, monocoque body structure, a front-wheel-drive drivetrain, and a potent powertrain hybrid system.
So does this step forward reward, or have Toyota played a dangerous game? Let’s find out.
Design: MPV Meets SUV
The Innova Hycross doesn’t seem to be your average MPV from the get-go. It steals a few design elements from SUVs —those meaty wheel arches, the piercing LED headlamps, the big grille that makes it look more aggressively cocky on the road.
The back is nicely sculpted with wraparound tail-lamps and this time in acutely raked profile the rear looks way sportier than any Innova ever.
In dimension, it is longer and wider than the Crysta but sleeker and more aerodynamically tuned.
Its alloy wheels and higher ground clearance ensures a neat blend between tough and suave.
Inside: Soft, Roomy And From The Future
One step inside, and you find a cabin that feels premium, upmarket.
Inside, the dashboard is contemporary, with soft-touch surfaces, brushed aluminum trim and a 10.1-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system anchoring the center of the dash.
The digital instrument cluster, sunroof, powered ottoman seats (on the top variant) and the multi-zone climate control lend the Hiace a aura of luxury not normally associated with MPVs.
The Innova Hycross comes with 6- and 7-seat arrangement, and as a part of the luxury the captain seats second raw comes with segment-first power leg rests among the seats.
Even with all three rows in use boot space is good, and the cabin has plenty of handy storage cubbies.
Performance: Petrol Smoothing with Hybrid Efficiency
The real tale of the Hycross is under the skin. It is powered by a 2.0L TNGA petrol motor mated to Toyota’s robust hybrid system pushing out a combined power of 186 bhp.
Power is routed to the front wheels through an e-CVT gearbox, enabling a silky smooth and seamless drive—particularly in the city.
What is seriously impressive, though, is the fuel economy. Toyota says 21.1 km/l, and in real-world driving, the Hycross returns close to 18–19 km/l—fabulous as such for its bulk.
The hybrid set-up provides the possibility of pure EV mode at low speeds and the car is eerily quiet and smooth at a crawl, stuck in traffic for instance.
There’s also a non-hybrid petrol version (172 bhp), but it’s the hybrid that feels the most future-ready.
The handling is composed and it gets monocoque chassis with independent suspension that ensures car-like ride quality, much better than the body-on-frame Crysta.
Safety & Features
Toyota has equipped Hycross with all the latest safety kit such as 6 airbags, ADAS (Toyota Safety Sense), blind spot monitor, 360 degree camera, TPMS, and vehicle stability control.
A couple of details send the Hycross into a higher segment, playing with the SUVs priced at around the ₹25–30 lakh tag.
Pros:
Strong hybrid for such high fuel economy
Plush, roomy and fun-to-drive interior
Smooth car-like ride quality
Futuristic look with SUV potential
Advanced safety tech including ADAS
Cons:
Traditionalists don’t have a diesel option
Despite driving quite sporty, e-CVT marred fun-to-drive factor for enthusiasts
Sharper variants at the end of the entry-level SUV scale such as the Fortuners rallied at each end of the sales-media.
Boot is small with three rows in use
