MG Comet EV: Amid a market full of brawny SUVs or bells-and-whistles-laden sedans, MG Motor chose to take a different path with its latest concept vehicle: the Comet EV is a tiny, two-door electric car that looks like it’s been plucked right out of a sci-fi flick.
And yet, this small electric oddball is getting attention, not only for its looks, but for its usefulness and appeal in clogged urban jungles.
MG is evidently pushing the concept that smaller is smarter — and I’ll be damned if the Comet doesn’t make a compelling argument for the idea. It’s created mainly for city use, however it is more than just a “grocery run” vehicle.
Design: Boldly Minimalistic
Out with it: It’s small. The Comet is pretty small actually; pretty much one of the smallest cars on Indian roads today.
But that is part of its charm. It is not aiming to look tough or muscular. Instead it owns its futuristic, borderline toy-like design and good for it.
The led strip running across the front, the clean side panels, and the tall-boy profile make the Comet look like it was born out of a design lab, not a car showroom.
If you’re the kind of person who enjoys blending in, this might not be for you. If you like hogging the spotlight at red lights, though, the Comet shouldn’t disappoint.
Inside: More Room Than You’d Think for Two
Hop inside, and you’ll be amazed at how roomy the cabin feels considering the size of the car. MG has really made excellent use of space.
There’s great headroom this is an airy open feeling and the big windscreen is wide.
Clean, modern dashboard layout. Next to a digital instrument cluster is a 10.25-inch infotainment screen that provides a cool, tech-forward feel. You even get wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which is a nice touch in this segment.
It’s a four-seater only, but the two up the front enjoy an unexpectedly premium experience.
That said, there’s no generous legroom to be had back there, especially if the front seats are pushed back. It’s more for shorter rides or kids in the back.
On the Road: City-Sized personality
The Comet is electrically driven by a 17.3 kWh battery, which is said to give a range of approximately 230 km per-charge.
Real-world range? You can count on about 160 to 180 km depending on how you drive, and on traffic. More than enough for urban daily commuting.
It’s quick from 0 to 30 miles per hour — on account of instant torque — and its compact size makes it so easy to zip through traffic or park in a small space.
The suspension is cushy enough for potholed city roadways, and the steering is light, requiring almost no effort to maneuver.
You won’t enjoy thrilling highway runs, though. Top speed is limited, and passing on the open road isn’t this car’s forte. That, however, was not the purpose of the Comet anyway.
Charging & Practicality
Comet is simple to charge up. With a regular 3.3 kW charger, that goes from 0 to 100% in around 7 hours. Fast charging is not available (which is fair enough, given its small battery).
The boot is tiny, yes, but fold the rear seats and you’ll find some satisfactory luggage space. It’s great for grocery runs or gym bags, or for a brief weekend getaway.
Pros:
Stand-out design, that is sure to get you noticed
Super small and easy to ride in the city
Plenty of features, rich interior with good integration of tech
Cheap to run and great for the city folk
Green and used by good for short daily periods
Cons:
Not suitable for highway due to low speed/range.
Rear seat comfort is limited
No fast charging capability
It’s a niche appeal — not everyone’s going to love the look
MG Comet EV: Final Thoughts
The MG Comet EV is not what you’d call a regular city car — and it makes no bones about it. It is brash, efficient and makes driving in a city — surprisingly — fun.
Sure, not for the highway or larger broods, but if your life mainly involves rattling round cities with short hops in nice weather, and you want something different from everyone else, the Comet’s the breath of fresh electric air you’ve been waiting for.
For urbanites who want to shed gasoline and make a spectacle, this compact EV may well be the ride.
